chairs

two empty chairs
in an open room
sit facng each other
the window lets the sunlight in
and its panes cast shadows on the floor
crossing and recrossing
the chairs
and the hollow space beneath them.

last night
moonlight was on the floor
shadows from the windowpane
again crossing and recrossing
the chairs
and the empty space beneath them

we sat
but not with each other

we listened
but not to each other

The door
to the open room
and the empty chairs
stays closed and locked
to keep the coldness there
even though today
sunlight passes through the window
and its shadows cross
the chairs
and the empty space beneath them
